Dennis P. Votra of Baldwinsville, NY passed away peacefully on November 9, 2017, surrounded by loving family, following a long illness. He was just weeks from his 65th birthday.
Dennis was born on Thanksgiving Day-November 27, 1952 in Syracuse, NY to Cedric and Veronica Votra- the fifth of eight children. He attended St Lucy's Academy and began working at an early age. He had a long and varied career as a tradesman, most notably as a member of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers for 25 years. A skilled mason, Dennis' exceptional tile and stone work will endure in factories, universities, churches, malls, residences, and other infrastructure from coast to coast.
In 1978, Dennis married the love of his life Donna (Buddie). They met as children in Phoenix, NY where their families had summer camps on the Oswego River. In 1979 they moved into a small camp on the Seneca River in Baldwinsville. They enjoyed working together with creativity and ingenuity as they turned this house into a home where they would raise a family and continue to build their life together. In 1980 they welcomed their son Brian, followed by their daughter Caron in 1982. They rescued many pets who needed homes throughout the years. Unfaltering in their commitment to one another, their unconditional love was admired by all who knew them.
Dennis was loyal and loving. His children have countless cherished memories of a father who raised them with respect and encouragement, and imbued them with his values and knowledge. He had a unique way of making his children feel loved and appreciated as individuals, and will always be remembered as a "fun-loving dad." Dennis also had four young grandchildren- Mason, Lyra, Weston, and Maelle - who absolutely adored their Papa. Dennis was a loving and patient grandfather who always enjoyed caring for and playing with his grandchildren.
Anyone who met Dennis was quickly drawn to him and his blue "smiling Irish eyes". He had a dynamic personality full of charm and mischief. His laugh was contagious, and he could easily befriend anyone. He was quick with a joke, and was always cheering for the underdog. He had a great appreciation for music, and was a classic car enthusiast. He enjoyed telling stories, boating, playing cards, silver strike bowling, and spending time with friends and family. He always met challenges with originality and resourcefulness, whether at home or on the job. He was truly one of a kind, and will be sorely missed by everyone who had the good fortune to be a part of his life.
Though not a veteran himself, he had a lifelong respect for those who served. Donations can be made in his name to VetsAid.org
Dennis is survived by his wife Donna; children Brian (Adrienne) and Caron (Ryan) Kiernan; grandchildren Mason & Weston Votra, and Lyra & Maelle Kiernan; siblings Bonnie (Jerry) Swanson, Gloria Swanson, Dan (Sylvia) Votra, Eileen Atkinson, Don (Helen) Votra, Doug Votra, Cathie (Frank) Schiller; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and in-laws.
Friends and family are invited to join us Sunday Nov. 19th from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM at Falardeau funeral home, 93 Downer St, Baldwinsville, as we celebrate Dennis' life. A brief memorial service will follow.
