He grew up on the family dairy farm and graduated from Baldwinsville Academy, class of '41. He enjoyed playing on the basketball and baseball teams in high school. After a PG year, he entered Cornell University, College of Agriculture, in September '42 and then returned to the farm in the spring of '43 to assist in the war effort. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps Cadet program in May '44 and served until the war ended. In November of '45, he re-entered Cornell and graduated with the class of '48. At Cornell he was a member of Alpha Zeta Fraternity and met his future wife, Mary Lou Seeley.

In the fall of '49, he became the Vocational Agriculture teacher at Wyoming Central School as well as Director of the Veterans on Farm Training Program, which served 5 counties. In '54 he left Wyoming Central to accept an Assistantship in the Agriculture Education Dept. at Cornell. After two years, during which time he obtained his Masters of Education degree, he was recruited by the US State Dept. to become an Agricultural Education Advisor to the Ministry of Education in Iran. Mary Lou accompanied him on this tour which lasted from 1956-1958.

Upon returning to the states, he took a job as a Guidance Counselor at Jamesville-DeWitt High School in the fall of '59 and retired from that position in 1980.

During his professional career, he served as President of the J-D Faculty Association and Treasurer of the Onondaga County Teachers Association. He was a life member of the NYS Retired Teachers Association and was a supporter of the Onondaga County Retired Teachers Association until his death.
